What is food dehydrators?
Since time immemorial, human beings have tried to find ways to store food, mainly to cope with times of scarcity. Thanks to this unceasing research, man has perfected a large number of techniques that favor the conservation of all types of food products.
The best known and most used are refrigeration, freezing, salting, smoking, pasteurization, pickling, vacuum packaging, and dehydration. Specifically, we want to talk about this latest conservation process, since technology has allowed us to have a new type of appliance in our homes: food dehydrators, also known as food dryers.
Tips for buying a food dehydrator: opinions
In the same way, when we want to change cars, we do not buy the first one we see in the dealership, but we inquire about the different models and their characteristics to make a wise decision when we buy one of these products we must also research and compare to find out which one food dehydrator to buy or which fruit dehydrator is better.
We must remember that food dryers are relatively new tools, and still little known in the domestic sphere. Therefore, many users do not know them well or have many doubts before tackling their first purchase.
Where to buy a food dehydrator? How do I choose a mess-free food dryer? How exactly does a dehydrating machine work? What are food dehydrators in a home? Are they really useful? These, among others, are some of the most frequently asked questions we will answer during our driving.
Next, we list a number of features that need to be set up before going through the box:
Temperature range: these machines are characterized by working at relatively low temperatures compared to those of an oven, but for rather long times. The usual thing is that they move in a range between 30 and 70 degrees Celsius. It should be solved well, not to make an unpleasant surprise.
Hot air distribution: there are two basic types of dehydrating machines: circular and square. In circular dehydration ovens, the motor is at the top or bottom. Therefore, it does not come with the same intensity to all trays. In square dryers, the motor is normally located in the rear part of the appliance and distributes the heat evenly on all trays.
Capacity: we can find both electric dehydrators with only 1 or 2 food trays, as well as other models with a maximum of 20 trays, in which more food can be dried at the same time.
One with few trays or one with many? The answer will depend on your specific needs. For home use, 4 or 5 trays may be sufficient, while if you are looking for your catering business, a higher number would be convenient.
Tray material: two predominant varieties, plastic trays (cheaper) and stainless steel trays (more expensive). The final choice will depend on our budget, but it is important that what we choose is free of BPA and other toxic agents (in the product descriptions it is usually indicated).
Consumption: keep in mind that, when working with low temperatures, the dehydration process of food from these appliances is usually quite long. So it is advisable to inquire about the consumption of each device so as not to get angry when you receive your electricity bill.
Noise: food dehydrators, in general, emit a small hum while they are turned on. If we add to this the long periods of time needed to do their job, the result could be that this noise becomes annoying. Not all manufacturers warn about your device’s decibel level, so be careful.
Timer or transparent door: to know that our food is already perfectly dehydrated, we have two options. The first would be to have a device with a timer to program it so that it warms up for the precise time for each food and then stops automatically; and the second, an electric dehydrator without timer (cheaper), but with a transparent door to be able to see the status of the food inside and turn it off manually when we finish the food drying process.
Ventilation: the ventilation system is essential for the food dehydration process to take place uniformly. This is one of the details that most clearly differentiates a basic food dryer from a high-end one.
Dimensions: we must not forget that these devices are relatively bulky. We have to make sure that their actions fit the hole that we will prepare in our kitchen.
